Reflections Exhibit + Sale

Front view of the Snowflake Coral Polyp Travels brooch - pendant

The exhibit + sale ended Oct 3, 2021 at the Pajaro Valley Arts gallery in Watsonville, CA

“Snowflake Coral Travels” was a new piece created for the Reflections exhibit + sale

As land traffic quieted down, ocean shipping traffic increased. Snowflake coral, an opportunistic hitchhiking animal, travels from port to port in the bilge water of ships. Bilge water released at a ship’s destination spreads the polyps who quietly invade and colonize new ports and defenseless reefs.

Creating Components

In the years since I made a certain filigree component, I forgot which gauge wires I used. I also forgot that I’d annealed several times during the process, an oversight which was easily remedied after the small twisted strands broke a few times and I spent a few seconds thinking about it. Turns out I liked the large wire combo better for what I have in mind.

  • 18 gauge fine silver + twisted doubled strand of 26 gauge fine silver (bottom right half of the picture)

Today’s samples could become a part of a filigree hinged cuff idea that is in the process of moving from my mind into silver. Yesterday I flattened wire and made fine silver diamonds that could maybe – possibly – perhaps also be part of the final design.

The other day I made these

And, tomorrow or someday soon, I’ll get back to making consistent versions of these

In the Mix in the Oakland Magazine

The layout where Souls Medal of Honor is published
The “In the Mix” section. Love the bottom half of the right hand page 🙂

Yesterday I half-heartedly leafed through the Sept/Oct edition of  Oakland Magazine for an article on Lireille Gallery; we’d expected to see the article printed in the July edition. I was stopped mid-turn by a photo I recognized: “Souls Medal of Honor”, a piece of mine that I just wrote about here a few days ago.

Very shocking and very nice! The “In the Mix” section of Oakland Magazine includes a very nice article on Lireille Gallery, and my photo is the one they chose to run with the article. If you’re looking for the magazine in stores (aren’t you?! 🙂 ) here’s what the cover looks like.

Art Jewelry in the News

Friend and fellow jewelry artist, Fran Grinels, loaned me two interesting articles on art jewelry from this week and last December. The Economist’s “Golden Globes” article focuses on the trend, galleries, artists and shows in the Netherlands. The second article in the Seattle Times “Pacific Northwest” Sunday magazine focuses on the large art jewelry community of artists, gallerists, and collectors in the Seattle area.

I enjoyed reading the articles and am happy that interesting contemporary jewelry is getting some good press.

An Afternoon @ the Lireille Gallery of Contemporary Jewelry and Art

Today I was lucky enough to be at Lireille Gallery when a very nice couple came to pick up two of my “Kelp” Rings. Below is a picture of the rings being worn for the first time.

Two of my pieces “Coral Cookie” Necklace and “Coral Pillows with Blue Pearl” Earrings made from recycled fine silver are now in the window of the gallery near the entrance. While taking a picture of the pieces I ended up taking a partial self portrait. Gallery owner Yan Liu can also be seen in the window reflection.

Peridot Ring – Flush & Prong Set

A fresh iteration of the “Bottleneck” ring design. All peridots. Four flush set and one prong set. The ring is ‘fresh’ because it’s less than 2 hours old. 🙂

Please pardon the hot spots and other issues with the photos. I’ll take a nice photo for the website someday….

Pacific Grove & a weekend at the Jody Royee Gallery in Carmel

The weekend was enjoyable at the Jody Royee Gallery in Carmel, where I showed my jewelery along with fellow art jewelers Fran Grinels and Daria Salus. Lesley Anne Spowart joined us also and her paintings help make the gallery a lovely place.

The Friday night opening of the tour at the Pacific Grove Art Center was lively. Afterwards, Fran and I dropped off artwork for the “Expressions in Metal” show which runs from Oct 24th to Dec 11th at the Pacific Grove Art Center.
