The three pairs of earrings in the exhibit + sale were inspired by Ernst Haeckel’s 1862 illustrations of microscopic sea creatures of CH Müller radiolaria. Mental deconstruction of the zooplankton during the hand drawing phase morphed the creatures into flat layers which would later become a 3D form. CAD software ingested the layer drawings and was used to further modify and output individual layer files for a laser cutting machine. Each rough-cut sterling silver layer was hand shaped, textured, and finished before the Radiolaria was rebuilt with industrially produced stainless steel screws and nuts. The ear wires are hypoallergenic niobium.

"Spring Radiolaria" brooch/necklace began as an enlarged hand drawing of a microscopic creature. Mental deconstructing the zooplankton during the hand drawing phase, I morphed the creatures into flat layers which would rebuild as a 3D form. CAD software ingested the layer drawings and was used to further modify and output individual layer files for a laser cutting machine. Each rough-cut titanium layer was hand shaped, textured, and finished. The zooplankton was rebuilt with 11.4 carats of tension set peach and green tourmalines.
The patinated sterling silver necklace is jointed with stainless steel fasteners. The brooch pin stem slides through integrated loops in the necklace. The pin stem refastens on the back of the brooch once hung on the necklace.

The garnets are tension set between 2 layers of low tarnish Argentium sterling silver. The ear wires are hypoallergenic niobium.
The name of the design is taken from its inspiration: a radiolarian in the 1862 publication of microscopic sea creatures by Ernst Haeckel, appropriately titled "Art Forms in Nature`. To accommodate stones, I modified the creature as I redrew the Collosphaera Huxleyi Müller, digitized the drawing, modified it again in CAD and sent the file to a laser cutter to be cut in 30 gauge Argentium sterling silver. The texturing and hand finishing includes burnishing each garnet setting location by hand on both sides of the metal section to increase the light bouncing through the stones.

The earrings pair well with the Circogonia-Epibulia necklace/brooch. The earring layers are the size I intended for the design. The larger brooch/pendant size was a happy accident and is now one of my favorite pieces.

I`d created a prototype version of these lightweight earrings in the past when I was trying the design via electrolytic etching. The pair is one of my favorites to wear. This 3 layer pair was laser cut in Titanium and Argentium. The ear wires are hypoallergenic niobium. Argentium is a low tarnish sterling silver alloy.
The design is similar to the earrings with Rose Cut Tourmalines. Without the stones, and with an extra layer of Titanium, the earrings look very different using the same layer design.

To make this pair, I re-drew the Collosphaera Huxleyi Müller radiolarian, digitized the drawing, modified it again in CAD and sent the file to a laser cutter to be cut in 30 gauge titanium and argentium sterling silver. The beautiful Smithsonite and aurichalcite in colors of the sea come from the land locked Kelly Mine area in the mountains of New Mexico.
Titanium off-cuts from motorsports racing were laser cut into Radiolaria shapes and, along with stainless steel fasteners, the 3 layers trap the stones.
On a visit years ago, I found the stones in a great rock shop in Magdalena. I`d taken cardboard cutouts of the metal shapes because I knew I wanted to create this brooch/pendant with stones from the area.
The siphonophorae inspired argentium silver necklace has D shaped rings to convert the brooch into a pendant.

I decided I need to shake up the views after looking at the Earrings page of sherrycordova.com . I started by taking new photos of 3 pairs; this is one of my favorite arrangements.
Underwater Snowflake Coral polyps float around and articulate while still in their colony to catch plankton. The new view depicts that motion better than the straight on traditional earring view.

Argentium sterling silver, repurposed suede offcut, stainless steel
Snowflake coral polyps travel in the bilge water of ships and invade and overwhelm endemic species in reefs around the Hawaiian archipelago and anywhere else ships travel. Snowflake Coral is predator free in these new environments and upsets the fragile reef ecosystems. The brooch/pendant represents the bilge port hole and water which contains a Snowflake Coral Polyp being released onto a new reef. The suede off-cut is from a local leather artist and represents the bilge water.
SCUBA diving off the islands of Hawai`i, I noticed this species more often. Watching the coral sway in the current, I knew I wanted to figure out a way to depict it`s dangerous beauty when back on land.
I`m one of the 26 artist members of the Monterey Bay Metal Arts Guild in the "Looking Ahead" exhibit + sale on view through Jan 3, 2022 at ZFolio Gallery, steps from Monterey Bay in Monterey, CA.

FORGE THE FUTURE EXHIBIT
I`m honored and thrilled to have a detail photo of my brooch/necklace Circogonia-Epibulia II on Siphonophorae Necklace as the image used for the show poster.
The future is here — the "Forge the Future” members` exhibit that is! And it is a stunning show with exceptionally fine metal art jewelry and sculptures. Additionally, there are two special cases full of mid-century modern metal art by MAG’s founding members from the private collection of Forrest L Merrill and the permanent collection of the Metal Arts Guild. They truly Forged the Future for today`s MAG artists.
OPENING RECEPTION
Saturday October 9 | 1pm-5pm
The exhibition + sale opens this Saturday ACCI Gallery in Berkeley, California and there is a rolling reception from 1pm to 5pm.
In order to accommodate COVID precautions, they`ve divided the reception into one-hour blocks which will feature a selection of the participating artists. The gallery hopes this will reduce the tendency for everyone to show up at the beginning and allow for more of a relaxed flow of visitors throughout the day, but feel free to attend during any hour of the reception.The time slot for my guests is from 1 – 2 pm.
This is a joint show between Metal Arts Guild SF, Northern California Enamel Guild and ACCI Gallery.

As land traffic quieted down in 2020, ocean shipping traffic increased. Snowflake Coral, an opportunistic hitchhiking animal, travels from port to port in the bilge water of ships. Bilge water released at a ship’s destination spreads the polyps who quietly invade and colonize new ports and defenseless reefs.
The brooch/pendant is on it`s way to the "Reflections" exhibition and sale of the Monterey Bay Metal Arts Guild at Pajaro Valley Arts in Watsonville, California. The exhibit runs from August 25 – October 3, 2021.
